Prop 8 Overturned

August 4th, 2010 by Jeff Snodgrass

I am not sure you heard yet, but Proposition 8, banning same-sex marriages, has officially been overturned by a Federal Judge in California. Here is a link from CNN if you wanted to read for yourself:

I just want to say right now, that as a follower of Jesus, that we as Christians are ALWAYS called to love the sinner and hate the sin. What I mean by that, is, this is not a time to start bashing on our government or anybody else. This is a time when we can stand up for what God has called us to do, and that is to love. Love your enemy, your neighbor, and most of all, God.

I say it is time that we finally begin share the hope, love, and purpose God is offering us, to a world that is moving towards destruction and loneliness.

Any thoughts?

i agree. homo sexuaity does not define what the person is or believes or wants to believe. it may be akward when your around them but that doesnt mean that we treet them with disrespect. i mite not be gay but it doesnt mean that i cant relate with the problems and struggles they have. they are no different, just not the same beliefe system as us. and i can love them for that:)

I agree with you 100% about how we need to treat people.
On another note, Californians voted against same-sex marriage twice (was once not sufficient?), but it seems now that our votes are not being considered.
I think that justifies aversion to this overturn. Love doesn’t always require passivity. Sometimes love means demanding what’s right, even when it’s not popular.
I agree that Christians, historically, have not been able to stand up for what’s right while also remaining peaceful and loving. THAT is going to be our biggest challenge, I think.
Thanks for your thoughts, Jeff! :)

Kent, you have a valid point here. Regardless of lifestyle choices, we all struggle with something, but at the end of the day, we are called to love everyone. So no matter what happens in culture, we are called love. WE CANNOT FORGET THIS. It was a command directly from Jesus. In fact, the two greatest commandments are to Love God & Love Others.

Rachel, I totally agree that this is frustrating because we have already voted on this, but I guess that does not mean what it use to in this country. I do want to throw out one more question for us to think about.

As Christians, are we expected to hold our standards of lifestyle choices onto people that do not have a relationship with Jesus? In a more direct fashion, are we called to force our beliefs onto others?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
